Hang Dog Smile

about

'Hang Dog Smile'. A good way to end an album...only we didn't end up doing this in the end. I have some great memories of our time spent recording up at Truck Studio's in Oxfordshire, and this is perhaps the best of the lot...
Somehow we managed to talk bass player Luke into climbing up a tall hay bale (the studio is situated on farm land), whereupon we (obviously) removed the attached-ladder and marooned the poor guy twenty-five feet up in his golden tower. Alex and I found the sight of Luke's legs dangling over the side of the bale rather funny (note: we had ALL been drinking) and fell about laughing. Suddenly the band who were just finishing work on their own album unexpectedly came out of the studio and cast us strange glances as they surveyed such a remote location being invaded by two idiots rolling around on the ground with uncontrollable laughter and another guy shouting for a ladder some distance up a nearby hay bale.
That band was Danny & The Champions of the World. I like them. Not too sure if the feeling is reciprocal though...!

lyrics

There's no need to feel much
There's no need to cry
I fell asleep at Christmas
Life just passed me by

Chorus

This hangdog smile I'm living
It's all that I was given
This hang dog smile means more than words can say

You told me it was over
You said we should pretend
So i sent my weight in flowers
'Cos pollen's not your friend...

Repeat Chorus
